Nyerere National Park

About Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is Tanzania’s largest protected wildlife area, covering over 30,000 square kilometers in the southern part of the country. Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, it was upgraded to national park status in 2019. The park is renowned for its remote wilderness, vast river systems, miombo woodlands, and floodplains, offering an authentic safari experience far from crowded northern circuit parks. Nyerere is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and plays a critical role in wildlife conservation in East Africa.

Wildlife & Nature Highlights

Nyerere National Park boasts some of the densest elephant populations in Africa and is home to large herds of buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. Predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs roam its vast landscapes. The park is also famous for its hippos and crocodiles along the Rufiji River, which winds through the park’s floodplains. With over 450 bird species, Nyerere is a paradise for birdwatchers. Its mix of forests, rivers, and savannah plains creates a diverse and scenic environment, making it a top destination for both wildlife enthusiasts and photographers seeking remote wilderness.

Getting There

Nyerere National Park is best accessed by air due to its remote location. Scheduled and charter flights operate from Dar es Salaam to several airstrips within the park, including Mtemere, Siwandu, and Matambwe, providing quick access to safari lodges and camps. Flying offers travelers the most convenient and time-efficient way to reach the park while enjoying aerial views of its expansive wilderness.

By road, Nyerere can be reached from Dar es Salaam or Mikumi National Park. The drive is long, often requiring 4×4 vehicles, and passes through rural villages, forested areas, and savannah plains. Road travel is best suited for adventurous travelers or those combining Nyerere with other southern circuit destinations such as Mikumi or Ruaha.
