Lake Natron

About Lake Natron

Lake Natron is one of Tanzania’s most unique and striking natural landscapes, located in the northern part of the country near the Kenyan border. This alkaline soda lake is relatively shallow and is known for its vivid red and pink hues caused by salt-loving microorganisms and algae. The surrounding region includes the active Engare Sero Volcano, rocky highlands, and vast savannah plains. Lake Natron is not only a breathtaking natural spectacle but also a critical ecological site and one of the most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos in East Africa.

Wildlife & Nature Highlights

Lake Natron is famous for its enormous colonies of lesser flamingos, which come to breed on the lake’s isolated salt islands. The lake also attracts a variety of waterbirds and migratory species, making it a prime birdwatching destination. The surrounding plains and volcanic landscapes host wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, and small antelope species. The stark, otherworldly scenery, with red waters, salt crusts, and dramatic volcanic backdrops, creates a surreal environment unlike any other in Tanzania. Photographers and nature lovers are especially drawn to the lake’s unique colors at sunrise and sunset.

Getting There

Lake Natron can be reached by road or air, although its remote location means travel requires some planning.

By road

The lake is approximately a four to five-hour drive from Arusha. The journey passes through scenic northern Tanzania, including small villages and expansive savannahs. Most visitors use 4×4 vehicles due to rougher road conditions near the lake.

By air

Charter flights are available from Arusha to nearby airstrips, offering a faster and more comfortable way to reach the lake. From the airstrip, a short road transfer brings visitors to lodges or camps in the Lake Natron area. Flying is particularly convenient for travelers who wish to combine a visit to Lake Natron with northern circuit parks like Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
