Mkomazi National Park is a remote and largely untouched wildlife sanctuary located in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border and northeast of Arusha. Covering approximately 3,230 square kilometers, the park forms part of the larger Tsavo-Mkomazi ecosystem, which extends into Kenya. Mkomazi is known for its dry savannah landscapes, rugged hills, acacia woodlands, and seasonal rivers. The park has gained global recognition for its role in wildlife conservation, particularly for endangered species such as the black rhinoceros and African wild dog.
Mkomazi National Park is home to a variety of savannah wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, elephants, wildebeest, and buffaloes. Predators such as lions, leopards, hyenas, and cheetahs inhabit the park’s open plains and woodlands. Mkomazi is also renowned for its successful black rhino conservation program and has been a key site for reintroducing rhinos and wild dogs into Tanzania. Birdlife is abundant, with over 400 species recorded, including raptors and waterfowl that thrive along the park’s rivers and seasonal wetlands.
Mkomazi National Park is accessible by road and, to a lesser extent, by air. By road, the park can be reached from Arusha or Tanga, with the drive taking approximately 4–5 hours. The journey passes through rural villages and scenic savannah landscapes, making it ideal for travelers who enjoy road trips combined with cultural encounters. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for navigating the park’s rougher tracks and dry-season terrain.
By air, charter flights can land at nearby airstrips, allowing faster access for travelers on tight schedules or luxury safari itineraries. From the airstrip, a short road transfer takes visitors into the park’s main wildlife areas. Mkomazi is often included in specialized northern circuit safaris, especially for visitors interested in conservation-focused tours and off-the-beaten-path wildlife experiences.
