Mikumi National Park

About Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and rewarding safari destinations, located in the southern safari circuit close to Dar es Salaam. Covering about 3,230 square kilometers, the park is characterized by open plains, rolling hills, and distant mountain backdrops, making it excellent for wildlife viewing in a relaxed and less crowded setting.

Wildlife & Nature Highlights

Mikumi supports a wide range of wildlife, including large populations of elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo. Predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas are frequently seen, while hippos and crocodiles inhabit the park’s permanent water pools. With more than 400 bird species, Mikumi is also an excellent destination for birdwatchers. The Mkata Floodplain is the park’s main highlight and is often compared to the Serengeti for its rich wildlife density.

Getting There

Mikumi National Park is easily reached by both air and road.

By Air

Scheduled flights operate from Dar es Salaam, with additional charter flights available from Zanzibar and other major destinations. These flights land at Mikumi Airstrip, which is conveniently located near the park’s main wildlife areas.

By road

Mikumi can be reached from Dar es Salaam in approximately four to five hours via a well-maintained tarmac road that passes directly through the park. This easy access makes Mikumi ideal for short safaris, weekend trips, and first-time safari visitors.
