Lake Manyara National Park

About Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a compact yet incredibly diverse wildlife park located in northern Tanzania, between Arusha and the Ngorongoro Highlands. Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park covers approximately 330 square kilometers, with Lake Manyara itself occupying a large portion of the area. Despite its small size, the park is famous for its rich ecosystems, scenic beauty, and varied wildlife habitats.

Wildlife & Nature Highlights

Lake Manyara National Park is best known for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior seen in only a few places in Africa. The park supports large populations of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and wildebeest, as well as hippos in the lake and surrounding waterways. The alkaline Lake Manyara attracts thousands of flamingos and other water birds, while the park’s diverse habitats—ranging from groundwater forests and acacia woodlands to open floodplains—support more than 400 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Getting There

Lake Manyara National Park is easily accessible by both road and air.

By road

The park is approximately a two-hour drive from Arusha and is commonly visited as part of the northern safari circuit. The route passes through scenic countryside and the town of Mto wa Mbu, making it an ideal stop before or after visiting Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti.

By air

Travelers can fly from Arusha or other major destinations to Lake Manyara Airstrip, which is located just outside the park boundary. From the airstrip, a short road transfer takes visitors directly into the park. Flying is a convenient option for travelers combining Lake Manyara with other northern circuit parks or those seeking to minimize travel time.
