Mount Meru is a stunning volcanic mountain located in Arusha National Park in northern Tanzania. Standing at about 4,562 meters (14,968 feet), it is the second-highest peak in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain is an active stratovolcano, though its last major eruption was in 1910. Mount Meru is famous for its dramatic landscapes, including lush forests at the lower slopes, alpine meadows higher up, and a spectacular crater near the summit. The park surrounding the mountain is rich in wildlife, offering sightings of giraffes, buffalo, elephants, and even leopards. Its scenic beauty and relative accessibility make it a popular trekking destination, often used by climbers as a warm-up climb before attempting Kilimanjaro.
Most travelers start their journey to Mount Meru via Arusha, a city well-connected by air through Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport. From Arusha, it’s a short drive of about 2–3 hours to the entrance of Arusha National Park. Treks to the summit typically take 3–5 days, depending on the chosen route and pace, and guided tours are recommended for safety and navigation. Climbers usually need to arrange permits through the park authorities, and hiring a guide and porters is common to help carry gear and provide local expertise. The trek itself passes through various ecological zones, making it a rewarding mix of wildlife, forest trails, and panoramic views of the surrounding plains and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
